Tools Needed

Millimeter Ruler, Pen / Marker, Mirror

  1. Stand straight in front of a mirror and place a ruler (which has measurements in millimeters) on your nose. The starting point of your ruler can be either at exactly the center of your left eye pupil or your right eye pupil. You can close one eye to see if the end of the scale lies at the center of the pupil.
  2. Keep the ruler steady and mark the location of the center of the other eye’s pupil on the ruler.
  3. The distance between the starting and the ending point represents the PD. Measure this distance in millimeters (mm).
  4. You can repeat the process at least three times for an accurate measurement.

If you find it difficult to measure your PD yourself, you can ask a friend to help you out in a similar way. All you have to do is stand steady!

Usually, the PD is measured during your eye test. If your PD is not included in your eyeglass prescription call your doctor to get the PD.

Remember to always ask your PD and a copy of your eyeglass prescription at each of your eye examinations! If not, you can always measure it yourself pretty easily!
